What do Social Media, Location and Mobile Have to do With Each Other?

Pretty much everything an this is what businesses need to understand. People are social animals, we have a range of networks from family and friends, interests, sport and hobbies and of course business. Many of these cross over.

We all carry at least one mobile phone and are communicating with our networks almost continuously. Naturally the younger generations are more active than the Baby Boomers but they are doing their best to teach their parents and grandparents. The ubiquitous mobile is the way of the future and many homes now do not use landlines for their phones any more.

More than 50% of people in New Zealand now have a SmartPhone, and these phones all have a GPS chip in them, therefore the phone knows where it is. There are applications being developed and launched daily that take advantage of location. These include social media applications allowing people to know where their ‘friends’ are through to applications helping people buy food and beverages, goods and services, news and entertainment, education, health and much more. Whether it is people crowd sourcing their friends to meet them somewhere or a business making offers based on distressed inventory or looking for customers that are nearby, location is wherever we are.

Huge numbers of people are checking-in with their mobiles as you can read in this article called Location-Tagging Catches on for Social Posts. It is a growing evolution that is unstoppable and presents amazing opportunities for businesses to participate and stay relevant.

There are many more stories about location based services and GPS on Luigi Cappel’s blog and some glimpses of what is to come at The Future Diaries.
