The Most Important Missing Apple, Google Maps App Feature On The Road …

I was surprised to read this, given that so many people are using these apps for navigation today. My main device remains the TomTom which was of course purpose designed and I would have struggled without it, in many countries around the world. Whether it’s exploring a remote part of a state on a remote trip, or traveling around New Zealand, when your gas gauge goes below 1/4 tank, you need to know whether the gas station is in the direction you are heading, or if you need to stop for a detour.

One of the most common causes of distress calls from motorists is that they have run out of gas. Of course it’s easier for a car navigation company to identify needs like this because it is a pure-play. They have a relationship with their customers and listen to what they say they want. You could argue that Apple and Google Maps weren’t ostensibly designed for car navigation even though many people use them for that, especially if they don’t have nav. They could learn from the car nav brands though….
